What's your New Years resolution?

So, here it is December 31, 2015. The end of the year where everyone was offended by something and the majority of New Years resolutions made way back in January haven't been thought about since early January or possibly February depending on the person.

I know that for me, news years resolutions always seem so corny. The whole "new year, new me" crap seemed dumb. For other people who really set their mind for a resolution or goal and tried to meet them they may not agree with me. I've always found that it's best not to assume you can meet a goal if you don't at least try to meet it.

This year I decided I wanted to become a certified personal trainer. Did I meet my goal? Not fully. I have taken the class I just have to take the test, and hopefully pass it the first time. Did I lose the weight and trim the inches off my waste line? Not completely. But you know it's ok because I made an effort; I tried; and I did manage to partly complete my attempt. Most people that set a goal like that probably don't even attempt to take the first step. I have to remember that this isn't a one or two year commitment, but a lifetime commitment. The last 3 years have been an awesome experience for me as I attained goals I never thought I could achieve, trained for running several 5Ks among other fitness goals. I've lost over sixty pounds and I continue to stay at a weight that makes me feel better and healthier. I went from barely being able to run a half mile without stopping to wheeze to being about to run 3 miles straight without feeling like I'm going to die. That's pretty good.

The truth about fitness is its not a one time thing you have to invest your time and passion into seeing yourself through your goals. You want to lose weight? Great! But what are you going to do about it? How are you going to obtain those goals? It's not just about getting up and exercising; there's so much more. You have to watch your diet, do cardio (no one really likes it), lift a few weights and structure your life and fitness regime so that you can actually meet your fitness goals. It's taken me a long time to figure that out but I've also learned over the last few weeks that if I can just focus in on what I want to do. I can't exercise five days a week and eat fast food and candy, drink sodas or crazy coffee concoctions and expect to see results. I actually have to commit.

Is that the problem you're having? I know it's not easy to admit but in reality it's probably true for most people. We aren't willing to give up all the things that make life easier for us. Fast food is tasty but is it really worth the gross feeling or the extra half a pound you gained by eating that number two combo large sized with the 'diet' soda? I want to vomit just thinking about it. I'm just as guilty as you are for picking up a quick meal when you're in a hurry or your starving while on the road somewhere.

For me, personally, it's my eating habits. They say abs aren't made in the gym but rather made in the kitchen. I have to watch my intake of daily nutrients, water, and other factors. I can run on a treadmill for hours a week but if I don't match my fitness routine with my eating I'll never see results. I see a lot of articles on different fitness blogs, magazines and other online sources that discuss this. Through my CPT class I've read and learned a lot about nutrition and just how important it is.

So this year for me is really going to focus around my eating habits. Meal prep is definitely something I want to strive for and really stick to. Heck it can't be that hard right? I say that sarcastically because I know how hard it can be. Along with my normal gym routine I've really got to work on what fits into my diet and what foods I need to eat more and/or less of.

While I do think New Years resolutions are corny and outdated i do think it's important to set goals that you know can be achievable. What goals are you setting for yourself this year?
